"Bloody Skunk" color pattern
Why did I call this pattern bloody skunk, of all things? Well that's an easy question. I figured it looked like a skunk with the black sides and the white back. Then I added the red sparkles and it looked like it was bleeding! I'll explain in what follows how I spray this pattern.
Necessary items
- an airbrush, I use a Paasche airbrush
- testors model paint. This brand of paint is sold as model paint for use on plastic. I don't know whether it will hold on wood as well. Colors needed are: gloss black, gloss white, red with a touch of black mixed into it to tone down the red a little for the belly
- stencil for tigerstripes
- laundry bag and clothspins
- extra fine red glitter
- 5/16" stick-on eyes, color: red
- envirotex lite for finish
The pattern explained step by step
- I use a store bought grandma bait as the base. I sand it down and spray a single coat of gloss black for the base.
- You can barely see them but there are red sparkles down the entire side of the bait. To get the sparkles I sprinkle a very light coat of extra fine red glitter on while the gloss black is still tacky. Then I let it dry the rest of the way.
- When this coat has dried, I use a piece of laundry bag netting to get the scale pattern on the stripes. The laundry bag netting is pulled tightly around the body and then clothespinned along the entire bottom to keep it tight.
- I cut the stripe pattern into a thin sheet of stencil plastic and I use this as the template for the stripes. The stripes are sprayed on with gloss white. When I spray the stripes, the stencil is layed on the netting so it isn't tight to the surface of the bait. This makes the stripe line a little softer, not so distinct.
- Next I mix a touch (!) of black into some gloss red to tone the red down a little. Then I spray the belly of the bait with this.
- I add red stick-on eyes of 5/16" diameter which I buy in a store.
- To finish the bait, I cover it with a single coat of envirotex lite.
